A dance theatre project by Robert Solomon and Jürgen Brickmann zum Year of Chemistry
Kekulés Traum
Who was August Kekulé?
August Kekulé, 1829 in Darmstadt born, with his theoretical The development of chemistry in the 19th century blinded. The most important idea is the conception of the structure of benzene:
Kekulé postulated that all, six carbon atoms ni are equal to this molecule and that they arrange themselves in a ring with equal distances between neighbors. According to an anecdote, Kekulé dreamt of this concept. Dreamed by dancing beings, who finally came together in a ring and grabbed their hands. The mastermind of chemistry is quoted with the words:
If we learn to dream, gentlemen, then we may find the truth, have been, let’s always that Fruits hang until they are ripe.
Immature fruit brings even the grower little profit:
it damages the health of those who enjoy it Ben“
(from Hafner, August Kekulé – the master builder of chemistry 150th birthday, Applied Chemistry, 1979)
Dream of the dancing Molecules are awakened to new life in an impressive way. The actors represent atomic and molecular building blocks that interact with each other and form new mokelular structures. Chemical reactions are as a dance of molecules. The molecular script was by Jürgen Brickmann on the basis of scientific factual behavior created and in computer graphically generated video sequences zen implemented, choreography, Costumes and staging come from by Robert Solomon, The Breath-Taking Images That Are Meant to Captivate viewers, the model-like representations then stimulate to think along.
The target group is a broad public, especially children and young people, who are introduced emotionally to natural scientific questions from chemistry ganz I m Sinne Kekulés – using them to create motivations and ideas develop.
Premiere is on the 24 April 2003 at the Staatstheater Darmstadt. The piece will also be presented at other locations during the Knowledge Summer 2003 in Mainz and as part of the Year of Chemistry 2003.
We wish you all the best!
Theatre project
The task of a good researcher is it, in addition to the activity in research and teaching, to bring the acquired knowledge to the public and to inspire other people for the knowledge. 33But how is it enough for people who initially have little or want to do with science? Jürgen Brickmann, Professor of Physical Chemistry at the Technical University of Darmstadt, and Robert Solomon, Dancer and choreographer by presenting natural science content in the form of a dance theatre.
The idea for the project was born two years ago on the occasion of a workshop of the Muthesius Hochschule für Kunst und Gestaltung in Kiel, to which both initiators were invited as speakers. It quickly became clear that there were many ideas about imparting knowledge and especially the motivation of children and young people in common. It would be great if intuitive knowledge of images, dance and music and to make it possible to experience emotionally. In this way, one would reach people and especially children and adolescents and Motivate for scientific topics, which have nothing else to do with it. From the fixed idea grew d a dance theater project Kekulé’s dream.

AUGUST KEKULÉ
Probably the most sustainable influence on the development of chemistry in the 19th century.
